Yankees Aren't Considering Releasing Alex Rodriguez

Jul 27, 2016 3:16 PM

The New York Yankees traded away Aroldis Chapman on Monday, but Brian Cashman says that doesn't mean the club will consider releasing Alex Rodriguez as a means of focusing more on younger players.

Cashman said releasing Rodriguez is "something that is not being considered right now."

Rodriguez, who turned 41 on Wednesday, is hitting only .206/.256/.364 (64 OPS+) with nine home runs in 58 games this season.

Qualifying Offers Will Increase To $16.7M This Winter

Jul 27, 2016 3:03 PM

The qualifying offer for Major League Baseball free agents is expected to jump from $15.88 million last winter to $16.7 million this winter, according to sources.

If a player who is set to become a free agent played the entire season with one team, that team is able to extend a qualifying offer to him. The qualifying offer is a one-year deal worth the average of the top 125 salaries in baseball.

If a player declines a qualifying offer, he becomes a free agent. Any team that signs the free-agent player loses its top draft pick -- if it's not one of the top-10 draft picks, which are protected.

He imagined him playing in the major leagues and made that dream a reality Saturday when he signed the Cuban free agent to a five-year deal with the Astros.

"To be able to get him now really in the prime of his career ... is a huge deal for us," Luhnow said. "It's probably the most exciting day since I've been here except for the wild-card win against the Yankees."

Encarnacion says the two sides "do not talk anymore about" a possible deal.

The slugger can become a free agent after the season and the two sides extended talks into the season after an agreement couldn't be reached in the spring. The Blue Jays offered Encarnacion a two-year deal with options, but he is likely seeking a four-year deal.
